Meet the Exec Committee: Frank van Sluis

Meet Frank van Sluis, IPIFF First Vice-President

We’re thrilled to share some insights from IPIFF’s top floor. In the upcoming weeks, we will be sharing blitz interviews with IPIFF’s Executive Committee, starting with Mr Frank van Sluis, IPIFF’s First Vice-President.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Frank van Sluis. I’m General Counsel at Protix, and I’m also serving as First Vice-President of IPIFF’s Executive Committee.

What does your company do?

My company is mainly active in the production and commercialisation of sustainable proteins, fats and fertilisers derived from the larvae of the black soldier fly.

How did your career in sustainable protein production begin?

Well, I started about a year ago on 1 May 2023 as General Counsel of Protix, also taking responsibility for regulatory affairs. I have previously worked in a similar position in other industries related to agriculture.

If you could have one superhero power, what would it be and why?

I would expand the list of permitted former foodstuffs as a substrate for farmed insect products to meat and fish containing former foodstuffs.

What qualities do you look for when hiring new talent?

Energy, passion and intrinsic motivation.

How do you keep yourself motivated at work?

By working together with my colleagues, and with our colleagues in the industry for the benefit and growth of the sustainable insect ingredients industry.

Describe the colour red without using any colour name.

I think about Ferrari, but that’s probably not the best example.

How can science help humanity?

Thank you for this question. I think science can help humanity tremendously because that’s the only basis on which we can certainly know what is good and what is not. Trust science and the scientific method.

What piece of advice would you give your 15-year-old self?

Follow your heart.
