PRESS RELEASE
IPIFF URGES AN EU LONG-TERM BUDGET THAT PRIORITISES STRATEGIC AUTONOMY, ECONOMIC RESILIENCE, AND GREEN TRANSITION GOALS—WITHOUT LEAVING ANYONE BEHIND
IPIFF, the International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed (IPIFF) commends the discussions surrounding the European Union’s long-term budget post-2027 of Wednesday, the 9th of July.
We welcome the European Parliament’s call to the European Commission for a new, targeted fund designed to leverage both private and public investments through EU-backed de-risking mechanisms—an essential step toward fostering innovation and sustainability across the Union.
IPIFF recalls that the European Commission has set ambitious objectives in its Competitiveness Compass to enhance the EU’s global competitiveness. For such aims to become a reality, swift and bold actions by the European Commission have to be translated in the next MFF.
As the EU aims to become a world leader in innovation—particularly within the bioeconomy sector—it is crucial to address the current gaps compared to major trade partners like China, which has demonstrated a clear commitment to investing in innovative and sustainable sectors such as insect production.
In a time of geopolitical instability and trade uncertainties that threaten supply chains, a clear commitment to boosting sectors, such as insect farming, capable of ensuring food sovereignty and enhancing the competitiveness of agriculture, fisheries, and aquaculture is more important than ever.
The EU insect sector aligns fully with the European Parliament’s call for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) post-2027 to prioritise strategic autonomy, economic resilience, and green transition goals—without leaving anyone behind.
As an innovative sector we face significant obstacles in upscaling due to regulatory delays and constraints and lack of strategic commitment and investment towards innovative and sustainable sectors such as insect production.
A clear commitment from the European Commission to support the development of this sector is urgently needed.
IPIFF has submitted its Position Paper, on the 6th of May, to the European Commission’s Public Consultation on the Multiannual Financial Framework—Funding Competitiveness, outlining key areas where we seek stronger support and commitment.
We call on the European Union to prioritise sustainable innovation and strategic investments that will secure Europe’s future resilience and competitiveness.
